Yreka High School

Monthly Newsletter

Welcome Back!  You may have noticed the new parking lots and roads around the school.   Thank you for your patience while work on this project was being completed.  The student drop off area in the front of the school will remain the same and students driving to school will park in the same areas as last year.

We are pleased to announce changes and additions to our staff this year.  Chris Harris is the Assistant Principal in charge of discipline, attendance and athletics and will be in the office full time.

Additionally, we have a new nurse and ROP Health Careers teacher on board for the new year; Blair Loftus will be with the district as our Director of Health Services. Maria Bode is our new psychologist; she shares the Health Services building with Ms. Loftus. Kris Prusko is a new addition to our faculty; he brings his past teaching experience to his assignment this year in Introduction to Industrial Arts, ROP CAD, and Digital Photography. Daniel Bixler is YHS' new science teacher, his experience is with chemistry, physics, and integrated sciences.   We are also very fortunate to have a Fulbright Exchange Teacher with us from Ireland; Linda Geddes will be sharing her culture and expertise while teaching in the English department.  We are pleased to be able to benefit from this honor and look forward to the opportunities she will bring to our district.

You may notice your student talking about "Red" and "Gold" weeks.  This year we are trying a new schedule.  On a "Red" week the day starts with period 1 and ends with period 6.  On a "Gold" week it is the reverse. By alternating the period sequence we hope to avoid any of the negative consequences associated with having a class period at the end of the day when students often have school events and concentration can be at a low.  School calendars are marked to indicate the sequence of the week and any unforeseen changes will be noted in the daily bulletin and on the school web page.

Our school web page is used by hundreds of parents and students.  Newsletters come out once a month with the most up to date information we have at the time; however, our web page can be updated regularly to show the most current information.  If you haven't had a chance to check it out lately, please do so, you may be pleasantly surprised.

We will be adding "Parent Connect" to our web services to allow parent members access to student grades and attendance.

As usual, the beginning of the school year is a busy time. Feel free to contact the office with questions you may have.

Welcome to the beginning of the 2007-2008 school year, it will be a great year!

Jennifer McKinnon

Principal

Student attendance policy

According to state law, attendance at school is compulsory until the 18th birthday or until graduation from high school, whichever comes first.  Students are obligated to attend school every day that school is in session and should arrive to school on time.

Attendance procedures are as follows:

Parents are asked to call the school (842-6156) if their student will be absent.  Upon return from an absence, students must go to the Attendance Office to receive an "Absence Verification" from the attendance clerk to give to their teachers.  If the parent has not contacted the school about the absence, the student must bring a note to verify the absence.  Anytime a student must leave campus for any reason during the school day, said student MUST obtain an " Off Campus Pass " prior to leaving campus .

A student must have a note from his/her parent/guardian stating the date, time of departure, and the reason for leaving campus.  Failure to follow this procedure WILL result in detention.

If a student attends class and leaves campus without an "Off Campus Pass", the student will be considered truant.  Students leaving during lunch must bring a note in advance or have a parent guardian contact the school in advance .  If a student fails to return from lunch, or returns late, they will be considered truant and will be assigned detention .

Open campus policy

Yreka High School has an open campus policy.  Students are allowed to go off campus during lunch only .  Students will be considered truant if they leave campus during break time or between classes .  A student must have an off campus pass in order to leave campus at any time other than lunch.  Students without off campus passes, or who do not come back on time after lunch are considered to be truant and will be assigned detention and/or referred to the SARB Board.

STUDENT PARKING PRIVILEGES

Student parking at YHS is a privilege.  Parking lots are set aside for senior, junior and sophomore students.  Misconduct involving parking or driving may result in the loss of parking privileges for the rest of the year.
